How goes the EV race? Companies with cash take the lead, startups struggle

The new world of battery-powered electric vehicles has an old auto industry story: Companies with deep pockets take the lead while startups struggle.

With a handful of the first units on the market, companies aspiring to sell EVs have their hands full of challenges, such as earthquakes and a lack of capital.

EV makers fall into three groups:

1. Established automakers entering a field filled with unfamiliar technology and uncertain consumer reaction.

2. New players with considerable startup funds grappling with vehicle development and factory projects.

3. Small players, many lacking funds and having to start production on a significant scale.

The EV players:

-- Nissan: As of July, Nissan was the EV market leader. The automaker expects to sell about 12,000 Leafs in the 2011 model year and as many as 20,000 in the 2012 model year. It is limited in production capacity by its solitary plant in Oppama, Japan, which can turn out a maximum of 50,000 units for all world markets. By the end of 2012, if it gets back on schedule after earthquake-related delays this spring, the company could have capacity for as many as 150,000 Leafs a year starting in 2013.

-- General Motors: GM has tripled production capacity for the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid that runs on battery power until nearly out of juice, when a traditional gasoline engine kicks on. By next year, GM says, it will be able to supply Chevrolet dealers with about 45,000 Volts.

-- Mitsubishi: Mitsubishi Motors North America intends to introduce its small i electric car in January through most of its 42 dealerships in California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii. It will roll out the car nationally in late 2012.

-- Ford: Unlike GM and Nissan, which developed stand-alone EVs, Ford Motor Co. this fall is bringing out an electrified version of the Focus sedan. Ford, using an outsourced battery module and an already popular model platform, is cutting its upfront product expense and retaining flexibility to shift production on Focus lines from EVs to internal-combustion models.

-- Fisker: After missing its late 2010 retail launch date, Los Angeles startup Fisker Automotive Inc. sold its first car in July, a 2012 Karma plug-in hybrid sports car, to Fisker Chairman Ray Lane. Fisker is beginning with a high-end sports car while it uses a portion of the $528 million that it received in low-interest loans from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop and build a more affordable plug-in hybrid family sedan. The sedan, code-named the Nina and scheduled for production in a former GM plant in Wilmington, Del., will go on sale next year through franchised Fisker dealers. This summer, the brand's 44 retailers are conducting a Karma road show.
