Volkswagen offering a discount of Rs 75000 on the old Jetta! Should you buy one?

Volkswagen will launch the new Volkswagen Jetta sedan on 17th of August. The new car will replace the current model and hence, Volkswagen needs to clear their old inventory before the arrival of the new model. Unconfirmed reports suggest that dealers are offering customers a discount of 75,000 rupees for the present VW Jetta. It has also been noted that sales executives are trying to convince buyers to go for the present VW Jetta instead of waiting for the new model to arrive.

This is quite understandable as company needs to clear the old stock before the launch of the new car. So is it a good buy considering the huge discount Volkswagen is offering? Well, no. It does not make any sense spending over Rs 13.5 lakh for a VW Jetta which even with the hefty discount is still more expensive than the Toyota Corolla Altis or the Chevrolet Cruze. However, if we compare the VW Jetta Trendline 2.0 litre TDI with the Skoda Laura Elegance 2.0 litre TDI, the Jetta makes more sense considering the figures as the Laura costs Rs 2 lakh more that the Jetta.

Still we think there are better options than the VW Jetta as the car looks totally outdated compared to its cousin from Skoda. Also, the Toyota Corolla Altis G Diesel will cost you much less and so will the Chevrolet Cruze LTZ which is the best buy among all these cars. Secondly, unlike the Jetta the other cars in this comparison will hold their value better. The Chevrolet Cruze LTZ has a 2.0 litre VCDi diesel engine that puts out 150 PS @ 4000 rpm and 327Nm @2600rpm.

The VW Jetta Trendline 2.0 litre TDI has to do with a 2.o litre diesel with 110 PS @ 4200 rpm and 250Nm @1500rpm. This shows that the Chevrolet Cruze produces more power and torques than the Jetta which will matter under city driving conditions. So for an individual, we would suggest the Chevrolet Cruze as it is more powerful, better looking than the Jetta and also much cheaper than the German car. Also, the Chevrolet Cruze will be lighter on the pocket when it comes to the regular maintenance bills.

The Toyota Corolla Altis loses out to both the VW Jetta and the Chevrolet Cruze in terms of sheer power and torque. The diesel engine in the Corolla Altis puts out a 88PS @ 3800rpm and 205NM @ 1800rpm. Hence, the Chevrolet Cruze LTZ it is, if you are looking for a diesel car in the Rs 13-14 lakh bracket. That said, the VW Jetta might be a good option for cab operators who might be looking for a diesel car that is reliable and inexpensive given the hefty discounts that the automaker is offering on the car.
