I have written before in these pages about my mother’s apparent regression to childhood. We think she is somewhere between three and four years old at this point.
Today’s topic is a new realm in which she has started mimicking very young children. She is becoming concerned about her gender.
Most of the time she is fairly certain she is a girl. She mentions this in particular when she is dressing or undressing and therefore exposing “girl” parts.
“I’m a girl,” she informs me as she puts on her pajamas. “Did you know that?” Her tone is just a little surprised.
I assure her that I do know and that she has always been a girl as far as I know. Just for good measure I mention that the cat, the dog, and I are girls as well.
The other evening she elaborated a bit on this theme as we chatted with our friend Peter.
“I’m not sure whether I’m a girl or a boy,” she said.
We replied that we were pretty sure she was a girl.
“For a long time I didn’t know what I was,” she noted. “I thought maybe I was a boy. Then when I got to be about eleven and I got … things [here she cupped her breasts] … I decided I was a girl.”
The very young Taffy was indeed rather boyish. She was a definite tomboy. Her hairstyle, then as now, was a Dutch boy bob, and she was frequently told she looked like Jackie Coogan, a child star who appeared in many popular films including The Kid !)
I’d love to show you a photo of my mother in her youth, but my scanner is broken. So you’ll have to settle for Jackie Coogan, who appears at the bottom of this post.
Taffy resisted her horrified grandmother’s attempts to feminize her—and she detested most dolls. (Being a girly girl myself I have always been sad that her curly-haired sister Lura got the collectible dolls in the family, including Shirley Temple and Scarlett O’Hara.)
Taffy always said she beat up her little brother frequently … until he became bigger and stronger than she. At that point she wisely stopped picking fights.
As an adult she was never super feminine, although she certainly cultivated the art of flirtation. I never got an exact count on the number of fiancés she had, but they were numerous. She didn’t like to hurt boys’ feelings when they cared enough to ask her to marry them, she explained to me once.
She always assured my brother and me that our father was the only one from whom she took a ring—although she did manage to order sterling flatware wholesale from the previous fiancé’s uncle, who was a jeweler. (She wisely had her maiden initial inscribed rather than the fiancé’s.
