VOX POPULI and the General Plan
They were not just the small core of “usual suspects.” They came from all across the city intent upon having their views on the General Plan heard.
While this event will be covered by several news outlets, my take is from a slightly different angle.
When a pal asked me why I did not speak up during the small group breakout session, I mentioned that I was more interested in observing everybody else.
Lynn with specific recommendations for the General Plan. It was authored by him and a volunteer group of about twenty residents and accompanied by a larger number of signatures from residents agreeing with the proposals.
So, why did I not pipe up in the breakout group? The thoughts I had during the three hours (expanded from two hours) were mostly centered on what elements of life in element of traffic? We are cursed with three major east/west streets – Santa Monica Blvd., Melrose Avenue and Sunset Blvd. – all which are principal conduits for east/west travel.
Because these streets are usually full and slow-moving, especially at rush hour, many commuters have discovered parallel streets through residential neighborhoods offer a reasonable alternative to major streets.
The consequence is that narrow residential streets must carry more traffic at higher speeds than that for which they were planned. The control which the city offers is a mobile device which displays the speed of approaching cars.
My belief is that drivers don’t give a damn and may even feel elated at achieving such speeds on short, narrow streets.
Speed bumps are out. The city no longer provides them. Also, some people who originally asked for them complained about the noise of cars running over them in the night. The bumps were removed.
Can’t have it both ways, folks.
How about cul de sacs ? Extreme move says the city. Would cause major arteries to be really clogged and would hamper emergency vehicles. I like the idea of cul de sacs placed alternately on San Vicente and Robertson, for the area in which I live.
I recall such a layout in one older residential section of downtown St. Louis. Heavy old anchor chains were looped between iron posts and could be let down for emergency vehicles to pass through.

Mackail-Smith put in a lot of effort, made great runs but failed to make much impact on goal. Naylor looked like he'd been in Donny's defence for ever. I wonder why we did let him go when we did? One main talking point was Gus Poyet getting sent off to

You don't have to make a video, but most money seekers do, and the successful ones avoid making it too slickly ad-like or blatantly amateurish; lighthearted hints that the creator is a little uncomfortable asking for money are a recurring trope.

Wonderful post, Joe. I couldn't agree with you more, And I couldn't have stated it half as eloquently. I frequently make the same point to many of my undergrad students, who tend to look at their education as more of a trade- or vocational-school pursuit. A disheartening number of them are more concerned with what jobs will they be qualified for with their new degree, as opposed to what they will learn and/or how they will grow as individuals. I tell them that they need to focus on learning to think in order to better navigate the world in which they live--a job is a means to an end, rather than an end in and of itself. I would love to live in a world of superheroes, as you posit. Too often, sadly, I feel that we are less like Superman, and far more closely resemble the Neil Gaiman's old gods--we're still here, but we've lost a great deal of our power to a society that no longer believes in us, valuing the pursuits that make us inherently human, instead opting to celebrate material things and shallow "comforts.
