Top stolen cars in Amarillo

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Earlier this week, the  National Crime Information Center  released its list of the top ten stolen vehicles in America.

That made us a little curious about what made the list in Amarillo, and how vehicles here are being stolen.

The top two stolen cars in America are the 1995 Honda Civic and a 1991 Honda Accord, but here in the Panhandle, the story is a little different.

Since we live in a more agriculture driven society here in the Panhandle it's not a Honda Civic that is the top stolen car it's a half ton Chevy pick-up truck.

"Which is kind of typical of the area, you're going to have a lot of farmers and ranchers, a lot of people have trucks in this part of the country so that's probably why our number are a little bit different that the national average," said Corporal Jerry Neufeld of the  Amarillo Police Department .

The number two top stolen vehicle in Amarillo isn't much different than number one.

"Number two is also a Dodge pick-up, so again pick-ups are more indicative in the area than say the Houston area or something like that."

The way they are being stolen is the most interesting part, most of them aren't being forcefully entered people are just leaving the keys in them and that proves true after this week’s report.

"We've had 15 reports of stolen vehicles 11 of them have had the keys in them, which is just astonishing that there's that many people that think that it's okay and they don't realize what they're doing, it's just an open invitation to the thief."

Amarillo's crime rate is far lower than most metropolitan areas, but the one thing people make the mistake of doing, is think that it won't happen to them or that it doesn't happen much at all but that's not the case.

"So far this year we've almost had 500 stolen since January 1 , we're just under 500 right now, it happens and it happens daily."

One tip Neufeld gave us was to take your keys with you when you leave your car, because it's just not safe not to.

He says even if you're going inside a gas station for just a second, you can't stop a thief who might turn your car into a weapon.
