Happy 10th anniversary to the PVR in Canada

South of the border, the digital video recorder (DVR), as the PVR is called the United States, was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in 1999 by several manufacturers including TIVO. The first units began shipping on March 31, 1999.

Since their introduction, PVRs have found their place in about one in four (25%) of Canadian households and about 38% of U.S. households.

A decade later, the standalone PVR provided by Bell TV and cable companies have not changed much important.Devices today have more hard drives and can record high definition signals, however, the basic functionality remains unchanged.

PVR: The next decade

The latest innovation in the PVR, introduced more recently is the "Whole Home" or "multi-room" PVR. First introduced in Canada by MTS in Manitoba, October 2009, a DVR in the house is a network enabled set-top box that connects to the television signal coming into your home and acts as a server or a central brain for the rest of the system.

In the implementation of MTS, the decoder works as both a standalone PVR, and a recording or storage device for boxes set up in the other house. Perhaps the most popular feature of the PVR in the house is the ability to record or play programs from any TV in your home. For example, provided that each TV in your home is connected to a decoder network above, you can schedule a recording of the TV in the basement, start watching your TV in the living room and then halfway, pause the show and resume where you left it on the TV in the room.

With a PVR in the house, the family fighting over who gets the PVR does not happen. If you have recorded a program on the PVR, but now your son and daughter watching TV in the living room, then just go to the bedroom or basement and watch the show previously recorded on this TV. Better yet, watch the big screen you and send their children to watch their show in the basement!

In addition to providing a central repository for recorded programming, the whole house PVR also provide other useful features. For example MTS "My PVR" feature allows subscribers to add, modify or delete records video on their PVR from any Internet-connected computer or select the mobile device in the world. The systems also offer three or four video streams that allow the family to watch and / or record programs simultaneously.

While on Channel 505 in full interactive mode, I accidentally hit the LIVE TV button on the remote, and the receiver came out of interactive. To my surprise I was also able to rewind all of the program even the portion while the receiver was in interactive mode, but not the interactive portion itself. Further to my surprise the 9242 stayed out of interactive mode until I changed channels then returned to 505.
