Picking up the pieces: Archaeologists unearth 2000-year-old mosaic depicting ...

A 2,000-year-old mosaic in Rome depicting the Greek god Apollo has been unearthed by archaeologists near the Colosseum.

Excavations in the bowels of an ancient Roman hill have turned up the well-preserved, late 1st century wall mosaic with a figure of Apollo, nude except for a colourful mantle over a shoulder and surrounded by muses.

The mosaic-covered wall is 16metres (53ft) wide and at least two metres (6.6ft) high. Officials think the wall continues down some eight metres (26.5ft) more.

The parts of the mosaic uncovered so far are made with various shades of bronze-coloured tesserae and were found shortly after a number of unique frescoes were unearthed in the same cellar space.

Archaeologists say the wall appears to be in a tunnel built to help support Trajan's Baths, named for the emperor who ruled from 98 till 117

Archaeologists are hoping there are more mosaics to be uncovered and have said they need an extra 680,000 euros to finish the excavation.

Son of Zeus and Leto, Apollo was the god of light and the sun, truth and prophecy, medicine, healing, plague, music, poetry, arts and more.

He was an illigitimate child - Zeus was married to Hera - and his mother was banished to an island to give birth alone.

Apollo later fought in the Trojan war where he shot arrows infected with the plague into the Greek encampment and was responsible for the death of Achilles by firing an arrow into his heels.

He had both male and female lovers and was father to many children.

@ Stewart Paterson, France. 30/7/2011 13:14...... Apollo and Artimis, Adon/Baal and Anat, Enki and Ennana, Rama and Sati, Adam and Eve, Arthur and Guenivere, the list is endless are we sure these, legends and myths do not have the same source in pre-history ? The Urantia Book just might explain the reason for these similar worldwide legends.

As with all DM items about fascinating archeological discoveries, I am now heading over to the websites of "the qualities" (Telegraph/Independent/Guardian). Not that I'm a snob, it's just that on those sites perhaps the reporters for these newspapers have written the full story, not relied too much on Wikepedia, and can get the dates right. sigh!

Can we take this ad proof of the existence of Apollo? Just like Christians do whenever 300AD mosaics are discovered depicting Christ and his disciples? Or can we use this as an example that religious figures in ancient mosaics are proof that the people at the time we believers and worshipers of those figures, and not historical proof of existance?

It's time to be very concerned about what's going on behind the scenes

At one point in the journey, his ship was heading straight for two deadly hazards– on one side was Scylla, a six-headed monster disguised as a giant rock, and on the other side was Charybdis, a sinister whirlpool born from the sea god Poseidon.

Roster of gods continues to grow as Hi-Rez Studios has revealed the first Chinese deity to be included in the MOBA game, He Bo.

According to Chinese mythology, He Bo is the god of the Yellow River but started out as a mortal man. He Bo made a sacrifice of himself by tying rocks to his body and throwing himself in the river to stop the flooding. The gods looked kindly upon his sacrifice and turned He Bo into the god of the river. Because of He Bo’s sacrifice, it became a tradition to throw a young girl in the river to drown once a year on He Bo’s birthday. Obviously and thankfully, that tradition died out.
