Software Briefing: IBM, Enviance and Oracle

IBM has announced the creation of a global laboratory dedicated to technology services, that the company hopes will, among other things, improve data center efficiency

The Services Innovation Lab will initially comprise of about 200 technology experts from around the company.

The lab will use data mining and real-time analytics software that IBM says will dramatically improve the operation of a data centers by enabling IT management to become “predictive and proactive”.  For example, one project will more accurately predict if a data center will lose power. The new technologies will enable better monitoring and maintenance of data centers that will improve quality and reduce costs, IBM says.

It will operate out of IBM Research’s Labs worldwide, including New York, California, China, Israel, India, Japan, Switzerland and Brazil.

Enviance Inc ., announced that Continental Resources Inc. has selected Enviance’s cloud-based Environmental, Health and Safety software to manage its regulatory compliance processes.

Continental, an oil and natural gas exploration and production company, will use the Enviance System to measure and report data on all HSE compliance areas.

Continental, the second largest oil producer in the Rocky Mountains, says it will use the software to manage health, safety, air, waste, water and greenhouse gas compliance requirements that are unique to the oil and gas industry.

“We believe excellent HSE performance is critical to the long-term success of our business,” said Zack Laird, safety manager for Continental Resources. “As our company continues to grow, we wanted to introduce a central software system for managing our HSE programs. This system will help us efficiently accomplish our objectives.”

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, a member-owned utility, has selected Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management and plans to upgrade its Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing application to support its smart grid and green initiatives.

REC will work with Red Clay and Lockheed Martin on the implementation and upgrade.

With Oracle, REC plans to connect advanced metering infrastructure usage data and presentment tools that, according to Oracle, will allow customers to effectively monitor their energy use and reduce consumption.

REC will use Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management to verify, store, process and format data it collects from approximately 150,000 smart electric meters, providing every department, application and business process with the metering information it needs, says oracle.
