Miami Dolphins rookie Jimmy Wilson, once accused of murder, gets fresh chance ...
&Mdash; Training camp is a hot, miserable exercise for most of the Dolphins.Rookie cornerback Jimmy Wilson is thrilled by every minute of it.
"Every day, whether I'm sore or not," he said. "I'm happy I can come out here and do the things I love."
It wasn't long ago that Wilson's dream of playing in the NFL seemed lost.
The trouble began in June 2007. After playing three years for Montana, he was getting ready to head back to Missoula for off-season training. While having dinner at his grandmother's house in the Los Angeles suburb of Lancaster, she took a call from his aunt, who lived nearby and said she was being abused by her boyfriend.
Wilson drove over and wound up in a confrontation with the man, Jimmy Smoot. A rifle appeared - to whom it belonged was never clear - shots were fired and Smoot was fatally wounded. Panicked, Wilson left the scene and headed to Montana. When he returned, he was put in jail and charged with first-degree murder, with bail set at $2 million.
Unable to post bond, he waited in jail more than a year for his trial. It ended in a hung jury, with the vote 11-1 to acquit. Prosecutors opted to try the case again, sending Wilson back to jail for another nine months. This time he was acquitted, gaining his release July 9, 2009.
Wilson said he tried to hold onto his NFL hopes while behind bars.
"Every night I'd go to sleep and think about plays I made, things I've done and seen, coming up with any way to get back out here," he said. "Every day now I wake up I'm thanking God for my family sticking by me, and for God sticking by me."
When his 25-month jail nightmare was over, Wilson opted to work construction while reconnecting with his family. But by last summer he was ready to seek another season of football.
That presented Robin Pflugrad, the Grizzlies' first-year coach, with a difficult decision.
"Word was out we were thinking about bringing Jimmy back, and for the most part the response was positive," Pflugrad said. "But there are always those people who say, 'Whoa, why would you step over the line there?' "
Pflugrad decided that the school owed Wilson another year of education, even if he came back as a team manager.
"He looked at me and said, 'Yeah, coach, that's great. But I'm a football player,' " Pflugrad said.
Wilson said he understands what Pflugrad did for him.
"After all the news reports, the flak I received after going to jail, it was huge on his part," Wilson said. "He told me he was putting his neck on the line to give me another chance. I really appreciate him for that. He jump-started my dream.

I don’t think of the combat in Batman as a quicktime event – I’d define a QTE as a series of button prompts that replace the normal control scheme: If Lara Croft requires me to press A, B, then LMB to dodge past a corridor of spinning blades, its a QTE, (and a lazy one,) because I already have a set of controls to make her run and jump. If timed button pushing is already the core mechanic, then it’s fine with me. Plus there’s a huge amount of depth and complexity to Batman’s combat beneath the simple control scheme, which becomes apparent the moment you get your arse handed to you in the combat challenges!
As for the steath bits: Arkham Asylum is the best Predator game they’ve never made. If the Predator franchise ever recovers from the awful AvP movies, the devs of the next game should took a long hard look at it.
Yaaaah! Welcome back guys, what a delightful surprise this morning as I notice it was on my iPod without me evening noticing I had downloaded it.
It’s great to hear you guys chatting again and it’s not like there’s not been a ton of news to talk about as well! Keep up the great work guys and it’s fantastic to hear you both again.
You needed a holiday, we saw that. I’m glad that’s resulted in you guys getting recharged again to do a new podcast. Keep it up.
Good to hear you folks back again. Two of my other main podcasts have shuttered their doors so this was a welcome surprise. I’m interested to see where the new format takes you, and I never thought that you guys should remain tied to games. Heck, I listen to Car Talk and I have little or no interest in mechanics anymore, it’s all about the personalities.
Guys I am really loving the new show format, it’s really nice to hear you enthusiastically talk about a topic for just the right amount of time.
This is great..
Naturally the comic nerd in me needed to pipe up here.
I think the reason this game did so well where as other licensed games didn’t is that seems to be the first game to be built around batman rather than a game with a license shoe horned in.
Sure it adopts a lot of tricks from other games, but in the right places. The story is original and doesn’t upset fans because it doesn’t mess with canon or context and makes good use of a simple few characters.
