Exclusive interview with Mike Hranica of The Devil Wears Prada
Was produced by their guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. When did you guys decide you wanted to work with Adam?Mike Hranica : When we were on the tour it was the first time we met him, and we got along really well. He seemed like a really nice guy and he's been engineering and producing work since we can remember so we have always been interested in working with him. Once we actually got the tour with them [Killswitch Engage] we saw he was a really cool dude, really funny and charismatic. He made remarks about working with us, and it became a great idea, which it was [a great idea].
Did you guys approach Adam to produce Dead Throne ?
Yeah, pretty much. I remember the last day of the tour we were saying goodbye, and thank you for having us on. He said something along the lines of, 'If you ever want to work with me on something, or if I could ever help you guys out, please get a hold of me,' and obviously to us we were like, 'We would like you to record our album,' or something like that. Later in the year when we were getting everything together to record again he was the one we wanted to do it.
Prior to Dead Throne , you guys worked with the same producer on all your albums. Are you guys wanting to change it up and use different producers for each album from now on, or would you want to work with Adam Dutkiewicz again?
It's to early to say things right now because people are going to say, 'Prada is going to work with Adam again,' but the process came together so, so well that I can't imagine wanting to work with anyone else on the next record. The sound of everything, and all of Adam's ideas I really couldn't be much happier with them. If we had to record a new record tomorrow I can say I would definitely want to go back to Adam right now.
I read you said Adam trimmed the fat musically for you guys and when I interviewed you in February 2010 you told me that you were looking to create more musically hardcore songs. Do you feel you accomplished that with Dead Throne which are musically harder than previous releases?
Yeah, I think we accomplished that. I would never call them hardcore songs, but generally these are some of the shortest songs we have ever made. This is also our first 13-track record, so that's 13 songs but it's hardly over 40 minutes. The songs are short, which I am really excited about and where a lot of the fat trimming came in because if he got bored he would cut it in half, speed it up, and put in blast beats for drums.
