Public Deeds: Gigs and Garlands
Today's AL record for shortest game was set at 55 minutes on Sept. 26, 1926, when the St. Louis Browns defeated the Yankees, 6-2.
The shortest game in Major League Baseball was set on Sept. 28, 1919, in a 51-minute National League contest. The New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-1.
They did not mess around back then, so neither will we. Gigs and garlands follow.
GIG: To Kay Fields, chairwoman of the Polk County School Board, for saying that the board's goal of improving the School District's grade from C to A by the 2013-2014 school year may not be realistic.
"Knowing that we aren't going to have the resources that we've had in the past, I'm really concerned," Fields says. "I wonder if this is putting more pressure on staff and teachers. Then, when we don't meet this goal, it hits the media that we're the worst School District in the country."
Board member Debra Wright said the goal is stressful for those who work for the district.
"I certainly want the best for the children of Polk County," she says. "That is a stressful thing to try and achieve when you don't know what you're going after. I just think it is a bit ridiculous."
Sherrie Nickell, superintendent of schools, recommended that the board consider extending the date.
The self-imposed goal is a good one. There's no need to overthink it. Just press forward with the best effort possible. If a B comes soon but an A arrives a year later than expected, there still will have been substantial improvement by the date set. That is what's best for the students.
GARLAND: To Gov. Rick Scott for rescinding exorbitant and likely illegal fees for public records from the Governor's Office.
He eliminated a fee for the first 30 minutes of staff time used to process a request.
Additionally, the rate for staff work on records was set at $19.43 per hour. That is the pay for an administrative assistant in the governor's Office of Open Government.
Before, the hourly charge for processing a record request was much more, but varied depending on the salaries of those handling the request.
GIG: To the city of Lakeland for considering an additional charge for garbage collection on alleyways rather than on the street faced by a residence. The new, one-person automated garbage trucks, whose use is being expanded across the city, cannot fit in many alleys.
The trucks, which require residents to use large, wheeled containers supplied by the city, pick up garbage once a week rather than twice a week as before.
