Corn festival celebrates the taste of summer
It is the beginning of harvest time and that means that the corn will be coming in. The smell of fresh corn was in the air Saturday afternoon, July 9, for Franklin’s annual Sweet Corn Festival. The festival was held at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church.
There were sights and activities of all kinds. On one side there was face painting and various activities for the kids. Along the other side there were vendors and displays, including Barbara White with a display of local churches and a demonstration of leather artwork by Ron Sullivan and Ken Smith.
At the center of the festival was live entertainment. There were all forms of music and performances by the Dendy Family Singers, Patton Street Band, A36, Men Macon Music, Line Dancers, and many others.
Historical tours of the Episcopal church were also offered. St. Cyprian’s was founded in 1870 as a segregated church for that section of the African- American population of Macon County.
There was also a silent auction held in the Parish Hall. Drawings were held at 2pm.
A delicious lunch was also served. An entire meal of corn, hot dog, baked beans, coleslaw and a drink was only $6.
Proceeds from all of the activities and donations will benefit the youth program and youth missions of Episcopal church and CareNet.
Agnes DeHart of Franklin attended the festival with her daughter, Margaret Uhar from Washington D.C. “We love it,” said Uhar. “We have been coming since it was the Kudzu festival. We try to come to the festival every year.”
The Sweet Corn Festival evolved from the Kudzu Festival and has been going for 14 years.
Macie Jane Morrow, 4, from Jacksonville, Fla., is on vacation with her family. Morrow enjoyed a corn-on-the-cob lunch before she could enjoy any of the games or have her face painted. But she said that she was still having a good time and couldn’t wait to play some of the games.
