For a few years the state government has been on degree college opening spree in rural areas. But most of the newly established colleges have dismal infrastructure, extremely inadequate teaching staff and offer ill though of course streams. The trend says it all. “For the entire month, I have been staying home because going to the college is no fun. We have five classes a day of which four are taught by contractual faculty and one by a permanent assistant professor. I do not think it is wise to go to the college for one class,” says Shabnam, a student of B A second year in Women’s College M A Road, Srinagar. “Every class we teach needs a prior preparation by the lecturer. If we undertake six classes a day where is the time for us to prepare a lecture,” asks Ali Mohammed, a senior professor in one of the oldest colleges in central Kashmir.“It is impossible to go on teaching hour after hour without a break. The government must devise a schedule that makes sense.” “In a high profile meeting of the concerned minister with officials and college principals held late last year the proposal was put forth that the contractual lecturers shall be appointed keeping in view the annual budget,” an official revealed.“The proposal was opposed tooth and nail on technical grounds by all principals. But the government went ahead with it.

for a quick answer: associate’s are two years, bachelor’s four years, master’s are six and doctorates eight and up. But I suggest looking at those in the amount of credits you need. Most college courses are 3 credit hours. For an associate’s you need 60 credit hours, which will boil down to about twenty courses maybe less if you take 4 or 5 hour credit hour courses such as calculus. The reason I’m mentioning this is that if you push it you can actually get an associate’s in one year, but it won’t be easy. You may want to try to CLEP some general education courses to advance quickly. With the master’s the programs vary widely from 30 to 60 credit hours so once again if you push you can finish in one year. For the doctorate I cannot really recommend anything because of its complexity. Some people actually finish in four years while others may take up to ten which is the limit. Hope this info helps!
