Centenarian helps celebrate bank's birthday
A 108-year-old "humble old tart" was the centre of attention in Invercargill yesterday as Westpac celebrated 150 years since its inception by visiting its oldest customer.
Frances Maude Wilson is believed to be one of the oldest people in New Zealand and yesterday said not much had changed in banking since she was a child, despite owning an eftpos card and knowing about internet banking.
"It is much the same as it is today – they look after me and my money pretty carefully," she said.
She is unsure how much money she has in the bank, but was good with it when she was younger and said she could "still buy a lolly".
"I didn't do too badly ... [but] I didn't spend it on parties either," she joked.
As a self-described "humble old tart" Mrs Wilson is still as sharp as a tack, and while she may be "a bit dotty, I still have enough sense to know one and one makes two", she said.
Westpac business development manager Murray Heath said Mrs Wilson was the bank's oldest customer, so to celebrate its 150th anniversary on Sunday it had decided to visit her at Vickery Court, in Invercargill.
The bank's Kelvin St branch also celebrated the anniversary by having people dress up in clothing from the era of its inception.

Those who are cluey enough to Google for “Trusteer Rapport” will find it is legitimate security software, however a closer inspection of the scam email shows that this is not the software that will be downloaded.
Those who do follow the instructions and install the software will probably feel like they have installed an additional layer of security only to find what they’ve installed has essentially granted full access to their bank account to criminals.
I have provided a report to both Scamwatch and Westpac.
