Chamber-sponsored Nationals Week activities
Knoxville — The Knoxville Chamber of Commerce has planned a host of events and activities for guests throughout this Nationals week.
Each morning, the community and visitors alike can have a hot breakfast at the National Guard Armory, located off of Highway 14 near the Knoxville Raceway. The breakfast, sponsored by Iowa State Savings Bank, is served from 8 a.m.-noon through Saturday.
There are countless vendors selling food throughout Knoxville throughout the day. The Knoxville Rotary Club's pie and ice cream tent is up and running this year on the lawn of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum.
The Knoxville Raceway Charitable Organization's celebrity softball game is taking on a new twist this year. In the past, sprint car drivers took on local "celebrities." This year, the drivers' competition will be tougher, as they play a team of current and form Knoxville High School softball players.
The softball game begins with an autograph session at 10 a.m. Friday. It will conclude with a home run derby. This event, sponsored by Reed's Automotive, will be held at Young's Park.
Young's Park is where several volunteers are parking cars again this year. Money raised through parking will be used to benefit the downtown streetscape project. Volunteers have also stepped up to run shuttles for visitors during the week. Contact the Chamber at 641-828-7555 for more information.
Saturday is filled with activities, beginning with the Raceway Tire-sponsored Bizarre Bazaar. This event provides a mall of vendors selling unique goods. The event coincides with the downtown farmers' market, and begins at 8 a.m. on the courthouse lawn. The bazaar runs through 3 p.m.
At 10 a.m., the Annual McKay Insurance Knoxville Nationals parade will be held downtown. Chamber Director Aanna Hoch says several entries have already been submitted for the parade, ranging from Stepping Stones Early Learning Center to Miss Motorsports.
Local sprint car driving hero Skip Jackson is the parade marshal. Race Director Ralph Capitani, and wife Marilyn, are the grand marshals.
Following the parade, beginning at 11 a.m., the 3M Club Car Show and Cruise will begin. Classic and other fine automobiles will be on display at 3M until 3 p.m. Cars will be judged.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., the classic cars will take part in a cruise around town.
