Life of Muhammad: The Knowledge Factory showing BBC documentary
The series has been produced by Aaqil Ahmed and directed by Faris Kermani, whose works include Seven Wonders of The Muslim World, Karachi Kops and Karbala: City of Martyrs.
According to the presenter, Rageh Omaar, an Al-Jazeera journalist, the series is an attempt to embark upon the historical journey through the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), from the Prophet’s (PBUH) birth, to prophet-hood and the following social, political and religious roles.
Omaar says that in keeping with the Islamic traditions, the use of Muhammad’s imagery and reconstruction has been avoided to depict his life. The documentary has been filmed at various locations in Saudi Arabia, Jerusalem, Turkey, Syria, the UK, the US and Jordan.
Omaar said he hoped the series will illustrate how Muhammad’s life and legacy is as important today as it was a thousand years ago.

Rageh Omaar and the BBC should be highly commended for their (metaphorically) sensitively-executed and recently-broadcast, 3-part documentary on this fascinating subject.
There is much I should like to say but very little that I probably can. However, I think the thing that struck me most forcefully is the astonishing gulf between what Muhammad seems to have tried to do during his lifetime and what was done in the centuries following his death.
1. How on earth did we get from his multi-cultural counter-culture (at least upto the point that he sanctioned the slaughter of people deemed to be a threat in Medina) to the xenophobic edifice that Islam appears to be today? No doubt, Muslims will cite the Crusades as justification for their paranoia. Well, let’s be clear, much of what went on in the Middle Ages may have been done in the name of one deity or another but God was not to blame; it was all the acts of men…
2. How on earth did we get from Muhammad’s misappropriation of a pagan centre of Worship (in Mecca) to an Islamic claim upon the Dome of the Rock? Oh yes, his very-convenient – and highly-mystical – journey to Jerusalem. I wonder, was this the basis for the story of Aladdin and his magic carpet?
Seriously though, much that was done in the 20th Century was misguided. However, in the final analysis, we cannot turn the clock back. We are were we are, and people must learn to live together; as indeed Muhammad very clearly tried to do during (most of) his lifetime.
As I said, there is so much more I could say but, it would not be wise for me to do so.
