Irene: Over-hyped or deadly?

Journalist

I often feel like an old song from the television series braying that says, "If it was not bad luck, I would have no chance at all." On Saturday, Terry and I had the house for us for the evening. This is something that is rare for us. We visited the grocery store, picked up a few things, including a film we wanted to see, and came home to fix dinner. We like the small, thin-skinned new potatoes. They have great flavor and are very easy to correct.I just take a baking dish, spray lightly with cooking oil, sprinkle a little salt in the dish (a trick I learned from Paula Deen), then coat the potatoes lightly with the cooking oil, or rubbing a light coat on or using the spray type and give them a light coat. Before preparing the potatoes to cook, I wash them gently and let dry or allow to sit and air dry. When I turned the faucet on the sink, he spits, pulverized, then nothing. Terry was perplexed, as she ran the water just ahead. We have a well, and I wondered if perhaps something had caused the breaker to start when the pump would have begun.I checked the breaker box and nothing looked bad there. Just in case, I threw and reset all the breakers. Still nothing. I decided to get back and check the pump, just in case. That's when I discovered the problem. The water line to the pump had come unplugged or broke or water was flooding in the box that houses the pump. It was pretty bad. However, one bit of good news is that Terry had just finished the last batch of tomatoes when the water problems occurred. Fortunately, we had many things to make sandwiches available in the refrigerator.Green tomatoes and a sandwich or two fed us tonight. No, I was not what you would call a happy camper. We did not like the romantic, quiet dinner, we had planned. After a little cooled my temper. I realized that it probably was not a difficult problem. Besides, I'm lucky that I have a couple of good friends who are good at this kind of repair. It was just a matter of waiting for the next repair. Not at night do not go as planned, the meal was not what I expected, but we still had plenty to eat, something a large segment of the world population does not have.Fortunately, our nephew Brian Mutter Sunday came and performed the repair. It took two trips the first time held the pipe about 30 minutes, then failed again. Brian, who had just arrived back at his home, returned, went to the building supply store and got what he needed to replace the hose from the pump to the primary connection, under the house. Fortunately, it worked fine since. (Keep your fingers crossed for us please.) Questions have been much worse. Ordinarily, one of the first people I called was my old friend, Charlie Borders (Junior that is.).It is very hard to solve such problems and if I had asked, he would have come over in the middle of the night working on it. The caller would not have made good but as he was on his way to the Delaware at the time. Charlie has worked for many years now under construction and, where necessary, to repair power lines. For the last several, it was the supervisor of a team. These are the guys who wade through snow up to the size, training virtually tornadoes, floods, or in this case, a hurricane, facing extremely dangerous conditions to get the electricity restored service to people like you and me.Charlie's work required him to travel a lot, often gone for weeks at a time. However, just before Hurricane Irene came, Charlie changed companies. He had the opportunity to go into a room where he was promised he would be close enough to be home nights, at least most of the time. This has become more important to him because he is engaged to marry a beautiful young lady and young soon to be married and be separate weeks at a time do not mix very well. His first posting after a job change was in Charleston, West Virginia Then came Hurricane Irene. Of course Charlie was in the front-line troops. The last time I heard him, he was somewhere near Roanoke, returning to Charleston to pick up more equipment and crew. I later learned that his fiancee has had at least one hour of sleep in two days while working for the men and equipment on the site of the penalty. Finally, Irene hit the ground at the Outer Banks in North Carolina. He hit hard and severely damaged one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast, a place I like to visit. He pushed northward by the coast of Virginia and beyond.Charlie and his crew have been somewhere in the Delmarva Peninsula, this small area where Virginia, Maryland and Delaware meet. I am a bit worried because I have not heard from him since he headed back this way. But after I thought about it, it may be unable to get cell phone service due to storm damage to the towers in the region. It is also possible that they may even have a regular phone service restored again. After all, there is a huge number of people still without electrical service. Now, some residents of areas such as New York, where the damage was not as bad as earlier predicted complain. They claim the evacuation of some areas was not really necessary. Some believe that the government "too much hype" the gravity of the situation. What disturbs me. I think I would be grateful for a house or a job to return to after the storm, thousands do something. I do not think I would be complaining about what is a relatively minor inconvenience. The moaners should ask more than two million people who were (and many still are) without electrical service if they feel that the situation was "too much hype."Ask people in Vermont and other northern areas whose homes and businesses were destroyed by flooding caused by huge amounts of rainfall. Ask people who have no work to return because of businesses destroyed . Or school systems unable to start the course due to problems of storm. If none of them are sufficiently convincing to skeptics, they must ask the families and friends of the 44 (so far) of those of 13 states, including premature deaths were attributed to Irene. I'll bet these mourners would soon convince them that there was too much hyping.
