Real injuries at MedQUEST mock disaster

A mock disaster got a little too real Wednesday.

Two Brockton firefighters were taken to South Bruce Grey Health Centre in Walkerton Wednesday morning while taking part in the MedQUEST 2011 mock disaster at Maple Court Villa, also in Walkerton.

Acting Brockton fire chief Glen Wilhelm, explained he believed the two firefighters became "over heated" during the exercise.

The mock disaster simulated an explosion in the kitchen at Maple Court Villa. Actual firefighters and emergency crews were to enter the building to assist the "victims," as high school students at the week-long MedQUEST camp also play roles.

"They were our first two guys into the scene, into the kitchen," Wilhelm said of the injured firefighters.

They were rescuing Avery Merkt, a Kincardine student at Walkerton's Sacred Heart.

"I was in the kitchen waiting for the firefighters to come in," Avery Merkt said. "They came in and dragged me out and left me on the ground. I think they went back in to get some other people from the kitchen." Merkt noticed the two firefighters were having difficulty carrying her out of the kitchen.

One of the firefighters was taken to hospital almost immediately, causing the mock disaster to be delayed. When the call was made to send the second firefighter as well, the simulation was shut down.

While the students did not get to see emergency services in full swing during the mock disaster, they got to see how they respond in a real emergency, something Wilhelm thinks was good for the youngsters.

"It happens in real life all the time," he said. "It gives them a good experience."

Councillors and students agreed.

Cargill's Amanda Wilhelm, a second year medicine student at the University of Western Ontario, was one of the councillors at MedQUEST.

"I think it's very important. They need to understand what's going on," she said. "We gave them a triage talk on Monday... just to see how firefighters, EMTs, St. John's Ambulance, the OPP, everyone has to work together and be a team in a situation like this."

"It was lots of fun," said Chris Stoner, a student at Saugeen District Secondary School in Port Elgin. "It felt pretty real."

MedQUEST is a medical-based summer program for high school students interested in pursuing a career in health care. This year, 30 students from schools throughout Bluewater District School Board and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board are taking part. Kira Mortimer, a student at John Diefenbaker Secondary School in Hanover, joined up because she wanted to see if a career in medicine would really be for her.
