She was the youngest voice on MTV Coke Studio. Divya Lewis talks to S M Verghis about getting a crash course on the music business and a single to be produced by her father Leslie Lewis
Fifteen-year-old Divya Lewis is the youngest participant on MTV Coke Studio. The daughter of singer-composer Leslie Lewis and granddaughter of the late Bollywood choreographer PL Raj, Divya wasn’t, by all accounts groomed to be a future singer. In fact, her dad, had mentioned how reluctant he was to introduce her on the show, before she had proved her mettle. But apparently, she had enough admirers to win a place on it. Music is democratic that way. Provided talent proves itself.
A student of a music academy outside Chennai, who is being homeschooled because of tour schedules, Divya seems a fangirl of classic rock and roll, not into Miley-Cyrus-Justin Bieber pop. Although that pair fit closer to her age group. “I don’t listen to stuff most teens my age do,” remarked Divya, asserting her right to be a mature thinking teen-individual. “I prefer older bands, like Led Zepellin. Like Pink Floyd. Or Jimi Hendrix and other real stuff like Coldplay. I don’t listen to commercial music. There are lots of truly more meaningful things to sing a song, than just breaking up.”
She added that the whole MTV Coke Studio experience, was a learning one from the start. “I got some advice from my father. He was always around to help, if I needed any. But most of the time, I was on my own. I had to figure things out for myself. In fact, I went into the rehearsals like a baby.”
Divya continued, “I had an idea about the music industry because of dad and Colonial Cousins.
“But Coke Studio was a crash course about the business end of things. I never knew how important its role was before this. You are forced to change a schedule, for instance, due to copyright issues. My father was constantly on the phone speaking to producers and others like that who mattered.”
She remarked that she was too young to remember her grandfather and what he was like. “All we have now, are home videos, in which he played happily with me. Dad uses the camera a lot. And wherever we were, he would tell us to pose for pictures. Sometimes it would be very annoying. But looking back now, it is thanks to him, that I have a sense of what my grandfather was, as a person.
