Get your fill at fun August food festivals
A little advice for your upcoming summer travels: Bring your sunscreen, your sunglasses — and your appetite. August, it seems, is food-festival month, which means you can get your fill of burgers, brats and a host of other foodstuffs.
“August is usually a great month as far as the weather is concerned,” said Bill Collar, a volunteer with Burger Fest in Seymour, Wis. “It’s warm, it’s dry and it goes well with food and beer because, you know, people like their beverages, too.”
We’d have to agree, especially when it includes tasting and tippling at any of the following food-fests:
Brat Days , Aug. 4–6, Sheboygan, Wis.: If your experience with “Wisconsin soul food” is limited to a single or a double on a bun, get thee to Sheboygan where you can try brat tacos, brat eggrolls, brat jambalaya and other ‘wurst-based wonders. There’s also an amateur brat-eating contest and a four-mile Brat Trot — just the thing to work off some of the 15,000 brats festival-goers will consume.
Burger Fest , Aug. 5–6, Seymour, Wis.: Oh, sure, there’s a parade, a car show and even a hot-air balloon rally, but really, it’s all about the ground beef. Dedicated to Charles “Hamburger Charlie” Nagreen, who many consider the father of the burger, the event also features a burger-eating contest, a hamburger-meat weightlifting competition and the grilling of a 150-pound burger. Not to be missed: the ever-popular ketchup slide, which is essentially a Slip ‘n Slide filled with the aforementioned condiment.
National Lentil Festival , Aug. 19–20, Pullman, Wash.: Yes, lentils, those little lens-shaped legumes that promoters tout as everything from a good source of folic acid to an aphrodisiac. Festival-goers can find out for themselves courtesy of a lentil-recipe cook-off — free tastes for the first 400 spectators — and servings from the world’s biggest bowl of lentil chili, a 350-gallon cauldron that will serve 8,000. Bring the kids and they can compete in the Little Lentil King and Queen pageant and get their picture taken with the festival mascot, Tase T. Lentil.
Potato Days , Aug. 26–27, Barnesville, Minn.: Potatoes, they’re not just for French fries anymore, at least not in Barnesville, where the last weekend of the month is a celebration of all things spud. We’re talking mashed-potato sculptures, potato-sack fashion shows and the Miss Tator Tot pageant, not to mention edible potatoes in every shape, form and flavor.
