Missing girl's body found on banks of swollen creek
A day after heavy rain caused flash floods across the Charlotte area, searchers discovered the body of a 16-year-old girl Saturday who apparently drowned in a swollen creek.
On Friday afternoon, Rianna Tarell Johnson and her mother, Gracie Nell Johnson, were swept away in the east Charlotte creek as they were chased by a security guard from a nearby store, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. They were suspected of shoplifting.
The normally shallow creek rose to depths of about 14 feet Friday, when local creeks and streams spilled over their banks, submerging cars and shutting down streets across the county.
That afternoon, police received a report of a larceny at the Burlington Coat Factory off East Independence Boulevard.
One person was detained in the store, police said, but the other two ran out. A security guard went after them.
The chase led all three into the creek behind the shopping center, police said. The security guard was able to get out of the swift-moving water, but mother and daughter were swept away.
Firefighters soon found the body of 43-year-old Gracie Johnson, who was charged in June with robbery.
Crews continued searching for her daughter but called off the search Friday night. They returned Saturday morning, and around 1:40 p.m., searchers walking along the creek's banks spotted Rianna's body.
She was found about a half-mile from where she and her mother entered the creek, police said.
Stephen Johnson, who said he had dated Gracie Johnson for about six years, said she was a generous person known to give food to people when they were down on their luck.
Rianna, who was just two weeks shy of her 17th birthday, was a rising senior at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology. She was in the school's ROTC program, Stephen Johnson said, and was considering joining the military after graduation.
"She was happy, friendly, positive," Stephen Johnson said as he sobbed.
Firefighters rescued dozens of people from flooded homes and vehicles Friday after nearly 7 inches of rain fell northwest of Charlotte's uptown over four hours.
The American Red Cross set up a shelter on Beatties Ford Road, where seven people affected by the area's flash floods stayed overnight Friday.
Officials said they expected more people to seek shelter there Saturday night.
At least 80 homes were damaged by the flash floods, the Red Cross said.
As Charlotte dried out Saturday, residents assessed the damage to everything from wooden floors to metal ball-field bleachers.
