Developers still divided on mobile app monetization, but love the cloud

Mobile developers are still divided on how best to monetize mobile apps, according to the latest Mobile Developer Report survey by mobile development framework maker Appcelerator and market research firm IDC. A full 50 percent of the developers surveyed ranked attracting new users who buy software from an app store as a top priority going forward, down from 59 percent earlier this year. Another 50 percent ranked in-app purchasing as a top business model, up from 42 percent earlier this year. Despite the differences in business strategy, however, developers are increasingly incorporating cloud services, which one developer described to Ars as "very, very, very nice."

Appcelerator and IDC conduct a quarterly survey of mobile developers, and the latest update reveals some trends in business model preference. Among the 2,000 developers surveyed, those expecting to earn a payday via app store purchases alone is trending downward, while those relying on in-app purchasing is trending upward. Half of the respondents said they planned to use, or will continue to use, each of those models for the next year. The percentage planning to rely on ad revenue remained mostly flat at about 45 percent.

IDC suggests the change represents a shift in how mobile developers attract and retain customers. As GigaOm characterized it , "mobile developers are increasingly focusing on engaging repeat customers rather than chasing sales of apps to new users." 

Still, developers who spoke to Ars says that the data doesn't necessarily support that conclusion.

"I agree that engaging people who already like your stuff is important, but I don't really see that increasing as a trend," iOS and Mac developer Colin Barrett told Ars. "Smart developers have always gotten that—this is why you see folks like Omni and Panic doing so well," he said. In other words, good developers are always trying to retain existing users by making good, useable software and continually making improvements based on user feedback.

Mac and iOS developer Justin Williams suggested that a divide in strategy has always existed. "There are two [iOS] App Stores," he explained. "One is filled with free or 99-cent apps that will likely have to look at things like in-app purchase to further monetize. The other—the one I'm in—sells apps at a higher price up front and doesn't have to worry about 'engaging repeat customers.'"

Another company that has added in-app purchasing recently, Stand Alone, said that attracting new users is still his top priority. "If the market is exploding, then shouldn't we be able focus on new users, rather than revisiting old?" Stand Alone chief Ben Gottlieb asked.
