Glossary- Exposure - The Beginner Businesswoman
Okay. Delayed but Undeterred. An app development company had a story this week that relates back to last week’s post. Shifty Jelly is an Android App developer selling a program that is used for downloading podcasts. They sell through the Amazon marketplace for Android apps.
Since they’ve started their app store, Amazon has had a program offering one app for free each day. On a normal day, the developer gets 70% of the list price of the app, but if Amazon wants to make your app the free download, they offer 20% of the usual list price to you.
Well, usually. It appears that sometimes, Amazon asks the developer to pass on their 20% in exchange for the exposure. . They had to decide whether to give up the potential sales by being featured, or give up on being featured altogether.
It seems to me that the same decision is often faced by Beginner Businesspeople. An opportunity comes along to trade a product or donate a service in exchange for the “exposure”. Sometimes this makes a lot of sense.
Imagine you have a company that services fire extinguishers. (FirExCo). You’re planning on doing some advertizing, and the local newspaper approaches you about doing a trade. In exchange for servicing $500 worth of fire extinguishers, the newspaper will give you $400 worth of advertising.
Since you were planning on running ads, and assuming that the newspaper reaches your potential customers, this could be a great deal all around. While FirExCo is passing up an opportunity to make a $500 sale, the fact is that the $500 in revenue could only result in $150 or $200 in net income after paying the costs. If the ad run brings even one customer that wouldn’t have found FirExCo otherwise, it offsets the missed opportunity. The newspaper gives up $400 in ads, but gets $500 in service. Also, newspapers ads are perishable. If it doesn’t get sold in a particular week, they can’t be sold later. Getting $500 in service, even if it’s not exactly what you wanted, could be better than getting nothing.
Sometimes, though, trading potential sales for exposure doesn’t work so well. Shifty Jelly decided to take Amazon’s featured app offer, and give up the 20% revenue for the freebie day.
The promotion was wildly successful. Shifty says that they were seeing a dozen or two downloads a day before they were featured, and they had over 100,000 downloads on the free day. So many people were using it that they had to spend more money on equipment to handle the demand. And the increased download rate after the promotion more than offset the missed opportunity and added costs, right?
