“We’re looking at how kids, particularly, get to the issues that they’re trying to help with,” says Eileen Morales, curator of collections for the Historical Society.The volunteering-through-school portion of the exhibit offers insight into the efforts of students from Princeton High School’s Community Service/Career Awareness Projects, which requires sophomores to volunteer for community service and create a journal about their experience. The journal can be presented in a variety of formats, including a traditional written journal, a video or a presentation.
One display explains how kids volunteered for the SAVE animal shelter and how some students continue to devote their time to the organization even after finishing their school requirements.
“It answers the question of, will these kids continue their service? Even though it’s a requirement, will they still want to do it afterward?” Morales says. “And many of them do.” Another feature is a DVD journal chronicling a trip some students made to New Orleans last November to help build houses for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The video shows young faces preparing for their flight and arriving in New Orleans. Next we see images of abandoned homes with boarded up windows, and other scenes that underscore how New Orleans is still suffering the effects of the hurricane. Then the journal shows students helping to build homes. The last theme of the exhibit shows how kids help other kids through an organization called, appropriately enough, Kids-for-Kids of New Jersey. The charity was started in 1995 by a fifth grade girl named Carly Rothman. A Hebrew School teacher inspired Rothman to help people, so she organized a walk-a-thon to raise money to buy socks, tights and underwear for homeless children.
Rothman’s family later moved to Princeton and she continued working on Kids-for-Kids. There are now chapters in West Windsor and Robbinsville, and beyond New Jersey in Massachusetts and Michigan. The charity now holds an annual Walk-for-Chalk, which has raised $200,000 for school supplies for needy kids.
“If there were kids in the area who didn’t have (those supplies), they wanted to raise money to get them to them,” Morales says.
