'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' plays at Fort Benning on Friday

If everything goes as planned, I’ll have a relationship milestone this weekend -- due largely to Meat Loaf.

Note the capitalization. We’re talking Mr. “Bat Out of Hell,” not comfort food.

I say Meat Loaf’s greatest starring role took place in a “Celebrity Apprentice” boardroom with Donald Trump. My boyfriend intends to change my mind Friday night.

The catalyst: “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

The R-rated film screens Friday night as part of Brew and View at Benning Brew Pub on Fort Benning. Visitors 16 and older will need a photo ID to access post.

The 1975 movie -- more parody than genuine horror film -- has achieved unique cinema status, thanks to late-night showings that often include props, costumes and audience participation.

In a Facebook discussion of Friday’s event, a reader summarizes the movie with this line: “It’s amazingly bizarre and screwed up and perfect in its abnormality.”

Sounds about right.

See, I’ve never actually watched the film. Or the rock musical that came before it. My boyfriend, however, is a die-hard fan.

So I’ve heard references to Dr. Frank-N-Furter. And the Time Warp. And Brad and Janet, the couple who unintentionally end up at a castle. Oh yeah, I also know that Meat Loaf stars in the film.

Before I learned about Friday’s event, my boyfriend complained about a lack of local “Rocky Horror” events.

He even contemplated organizing one himself, a goal I subtly discouraged in fear of an audience consisting solely of me and my dog.

Things are much better this way. Organizers of Friday’s screening say it’s OK to bring props and wear costumes. I’ve attached a prop/costume list to the online version of this story.

Also, I consulted “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” Official Fan Site for advice geared toward first-time viewers.

Among the tips: “No one expects you to know much of anything your first time out. While audience participation is mandatory to keep the show alive, it is not mandatory that everyone participate, every time.”

I feel much better now.

Actually, my excitement about joining my boyfriend in one of his interests overshadows any “Rocky Horror” nervousness.

After Friday night, I might finally understand his cult language code related to the film, maybe even enough to buy some $2,000 memorabilia. Kidding.
