Weight loss seems to elude many people, and Americans keep growing larger looking for the magic cure. Experts, though, say weight loss is no mystery, but it takes dedication—and following a few simple steps. In fact, the philosophies are rather simple.
“Weight loss tip of the day: Do not go on a diet,” said Dr. Fernando B. Bonanni, director of the Institute of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital.
He said that diets, especially the fads of cutting out a particular food group, or limiting calories to just a few hundred a day, are not how people naturally eat, so they are too difficult to maintain.
“They are not realistic, and they do not work long term,” Bonanni said.
Instead, focus on those basics that most people already have in the back of their heads, but tend to ignore. It may take a top doctor to remind us of the weight-loss or weight-maintenance strategies, but they really are pretty simple. Bonanni rattled off the weight loss commandments quickly.
“Start with moderate portions,” he said.
That means eat a little less of whatever is on the plate, and make sure it’s the correct portion for your height and weight. Of those portions, Bonanni recommends eating 60 to 80 grams of protein per day from good, low-fat sources.
“Avoid carbohydrates towards the end of the day,” he said.
Carbs should be a part of a healthy diet, especially whole grains and whole-wheat pastas and breads, but they are better to eat for breakfast or lunch rather than dinner.
“Do not eat before bed,” Bonanni said.
The body burns less energy while it’s at rest, so it doesn’t need the calories, and it won’t use them. Skip the late-night snack or bedtime dessert. Many people fall into the pit of having a bowl of cereal or a piece of toast and warm milk before going to bed, or eating to stay alert, but don’t do it, Bonanni said.
“Do not drink a calorie,” he said.
Sodas, juice and alcoholic beverages rack up calories fast, and should be avoided. Drink six to eight glasses of water per day. Water is a natural diuretic and an essential component of the body. It helps curb hunger, and it is as healthy as you can get for a zero calorie liquid. It also helps curb the appetite for carbohydrates.
There are two pointers Bonanni gave that may not seem obvious, and they may go against what some people think of a strategy for weight loss. Although they may sound counter-intuitive, Bonanni recommends using real sugar or honey in small quantities, and eating (what may seem like) constantly.
