I’ve been meaning to read some of PKD’s work and I just happen to stumble upon a 4 story compilation at Barnes and Nobles a few weeks ago. First up was a one I’ve never heard of, it’s the alternate history story The Man in the High Castle. PKD developed a world where the allies lost World War Two and the world was then divided up between the Germans and the Japanese. There are three loosely related story lines coinciding as the world is going through a bit of a turmoil with the death of the German leader and the resulting power struggle. With characters in just about every facet of the culture in the Western United States Dick gives a full flushed out vision of this world.
I’m not a huge fan of the alternate reality or alternate history genre, but with that being said, I really appreciated the vision and the talent it took to create this universe. I feel like there was a lot more going on in the authors mind as he was writing the novel and that those events shaped the events that he actually did write about. I takes a lot of restraint to keep it to a little over 200 pages where there could easily be 500 or more, and that would only be scratching the surface. Even the stories of the individual people PKD used to describe the universe could have continued. They were fully develop characters that showed tremendous growth as the story progressed, but while reading I felt there was more to them that PKD had intended, but didn’t want to, or perhaps have a chance to add.
There’s a bit of a mind bend moment at the end of the novel for both the reader and the characters that didn’t really make sense to me. It could be that it’s just my first PKD novel so I’m not used to his unorthodox style, or it could be that he was just a little crazy.
I would suggest The Man in the High Castle to anyone PKD fans, some one who like alternate history, or people that like weird fiction.

Edit: Turns out that PKD intended to write a sequel and even finished two chapters that were published after his death. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for a copy of “The Shifting Realities of Philip K. Dick.

@ not exactly comparable. Move on to Man in the High Castle rather than Dune. That's just schlock.
finished The Man In The High Castle by PKD last night. Good read. Soon to be a BBC drama, apparently. can't see it working but will watch
