Bon-Ton July key revenue metric falls 1.6 pct.

The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. said Thursday that revenue at stores open at least a year dipped 1.6 percent last month, as July sales of juniors, children's, shoes and furniture disappointed.

The figure is a key indicator of a retailer's health because it excludes results from stores that opened or closed during the year.

Bon-Ton said some of its strongest categories included fine jewelry, men's sportswear and large-size sportswear.

Total revenue for the four weeks ended July 30 fell 2.3 percent to $173.6 million.

For the second quarter, revenue at stores open at least a year declined 1.5 percent, with total revenue down 2.2 percent to $595.5 million.

For the year-to-date, revenue at stores open at least a year declined 1.4 percent. Total revenue slipped 1.9 percent to $1.25 billion.

Bon-Ton, with corporate headquarters in York, Pa., and Milwaukee, will report its second-quarter earnings Aug. 18. The company runs 275 department stores, including 11 furniture galleries, in 23 states in the Northeast, Midwest and upper Great Plains under the Bon-Ton, Bergner's, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's, Parisian and Younkers names.
