Magellan navigates the outback with new eXplorist GPS units

SYDNEY, NSW: GPS navigation supplier Magellan has launched two new waterproof hand-held navigation devices as a part of its eXplorist range.

Targeted at a nation of adventurers who want to “explore their limits,” the devices offer Australian consumers an accurate navigation tool that can be taken from the car right out into the great outdoors, according to Wendy Hammond, marketing director of Magellan Australia.

“Magellan’s eXplorist series has something for everyone as it has such a wide range of uses - in cars, boats, kayaks, bicycles, motorbikes and four-wheel drives, on skis or your own two feet,” said Hammond. “Wherever you go, the eXplorist gives you an added level of safety, such as the ability to view and record your journey with a sequence of digital breadcrumbs to make sure you can always get back to where you started from.”

For entry-level consumers and families who love camping, Magellan has released the eXplorist 310, which features a 2.2-inch screen and a range of features including the ability to store tracks, a backtrack feature and the Premium World Base map with information on land use, parks and waterways.

For more serious outdoor adventurers, there is also the “high-performance” eXplorist 710 model, which offers “the best outdoor guidance currently available, including turn by turn street navigation along the way to the next summit, river, canyon or bush”.

The two new devices will join the eXplorist GC, which has been designed for casual exploring and geocaching, as well as the eXplorist 510 and 610 which offer 3-inch touch screens.

The eXplorist range can be used with Navionics marine, lake and fishing maps for accurate information on waterways and depth contours, as well as the Summit Series Australia Discovery topographical map that tracks terrain elevation and difficulty as well as pinpointing key places of interest such as camp sites.

The eXplorist 510, 610 and 710 models feature an inbuilt 3.2 megapixel camera, while all models in the range have long-lasting AA alkaline batteries, a power-saving Suspend Mode and are waterproof to IPX-7 standards – so you can drop them in a metre of water for up to half an hour without any damage.

“In short, Magellan’s eXplorist series provide adventurers of all levels of experience accurate and essential information to keep them safer and give them the confidence to explore their limits,” said Hammond.

Magellan has rolled out a new aerial imagery subscription program for their eXplorist and Triton lines. Like the DeLorme  and Garmin services, this one will utilize DigitalGlobe imagery and runs $29.99 per year. Compatible units are the eXplorist 310, eXplorist 510, eXplorist 610, and eXplorist 710, Triton 400, Triton 500, Triton 1500 and Triton 2000. Imagery will need to be downloaded and transferred via Magellan’s VantagePoint program. As far as I know, that is still a Windows only program. Previously, Triton owners could use National Geographic’s TOPO Explorer application for aerial imagery, though I found the quality of that offering lacking; the DigitalGlobe imagery should be much better.
