KNIT TOGETHER: Sisters of the Wool offers crafting, conversation
A few years back Pat Brost and her friends were indulging in their weekly Wednesday night knitting get-together when Brost’s boyfriend walked in and said, "Oh, it’s the sisters of the wool." And so began the yarn of a knitting shop that’s evolved into a gathering place for knitters seeking community, inspiration, and a place to ply their craft to benefit others."When I opened the shop, I knew it had to be called Sisters of the Wool," said Brost as women of varying ages began to drift into the store in the Westport Village Commons on Thursday night toting bags bursting with knitting projects underway. Those already settled on the wing chairs and love seats issued friendly greetings as the casual camaraderie melded with the rhythmic focus of the knitters.
The comfortable circle, bordered on one side by a display case of the soft and colorful skeins of their craft, dissolved into laughter as Pat Roth, the only male in the group, declared his spinning wheel to be a "babe magnet." "And I can say that, because that’s my wife over there," he added pointing to the love seat where his wife, Barbara, and daughter Kara were working on their own knitting projects.
Over the past couple weeks Brost said about 20 people have shown up for the weekly Thursday night knitting circles that start at 6 p.m. And this night appears to be no different as knitters wander into the store at 770 Main Road. "It’s fun, and there’s a real sense of community," said Brost. "It’s a place to knit that’s comfortable and convenient. There are too many people knitting in isolation. It’s also great for getting ideas and sparking creativity — one can only make so many scarves." On Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., the store hosts a community service knitting group that gathers to knit items to help others. The store also supplies free yarn and patterns to knitters who join in the community service group to make helmet liners for soldiers (according to specific military patterns), chemotherapy caps that are donated to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and premie and hats and blankets for infants at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
Pam Levesque, one of Brost’s three "sisters of wool" was in the shop on Thursday night working on a lavender colored baby hat for the community service knitting group. "I’ve been knitting for about 25 years," said Levesque, adding she and Brost have been friends for about 48 years. The other two friends from the original sisters of the wool, Louise Robinson and Mary Ann Sheehan are also regulars at the store’s knitting groups. Newcomers to the groups are offered free knitting lessons, and Brost said she also plans to offer classes in specialties such as making lace and socks.
